First Complete MIPI M-PHY Test Suite Launched by Agilent Technologies

Recently, Agilent Technologies announced that it had launched a comprehensive MIPI M-PHY test solution for mobile computing customers. This test suite can help design engineers turn on, debug and validate all layers, including physical and protocol layers, of their M-PHY devices with its speed 5.8 Gb per second.
MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface) Alliance will settle down the M-PHY specification finally, which could further allow the development of faster, more reliable high-speed interfaces for mobile devices. Meanwhile, M-PHY technology supports a variety of applications, such as, interfaces for monitors, cameras, audio and video devices, memory, power management and communication between baseband and RFIC components.
As for the Agilent solution, it mainly refers to oscilloscopes, protocol analyzers and exercisers as well as bit error-rate testers (BERTs) using custom M-PHY stimulus software. Each device is equipped with custom M-PHY software which can support design teams during the whole process of product design.
Agilent's MIPI program manager, Roland Scherzinger said, “Working closely with customers developing early M-PHY-based silicon allowed us to provide robust M-PHY test solutions even before the final specification became available.” And then, Roland further added, “In addition, we were happy to share our experience in testing high-speed serial technologies in the MIPI workgroups, ensuring robust M-PHY specifications in terms of signal integrity and testability.”
The Infiniium 90000 X series oscilloscope supplies industry-leading, real-time bandwidth up to 32 GHz with the industry’s only 30 GHz probing system. Being the industry’s lowest noise and jitter measurement floor performance, the scope is accurate and ideal choice for Gear 3’s MIPI M-PHY transmitter conformance testing for speeds. By using it, engineers increase their confidence in MIPI M-PHY product performance.
Moreover, MIPI M-PHY receiver testing is supported by Agilent’s high-performance ParBERT 81250A used in multi-lane testing and J-BERT N4903B adopted in single-lane testing. Although MIPI M-PHY receiver test specifications have not yet been settled, engineers are able to use these BERTs for accurate M-PHY receiver tolerance testing, or combine the whole BERT equipment with N5181/2A, E4438C and 81150A signal generators during the using process.
N5990A-165 MIPI M-PHY/ DigRF v4 can save quite an amount of R&D time since it automatically calibrates stress conditions and controls all test electronic component equipment for automated receiver tolerance tests. What’s more, on the basis of MIPI M-PHY, N5343A and N5344A DigRF v4 exercisers and analyzers could offer totally new insights with their range from individual bits to IQ modulated RF signals.

The Razor-thin Profit Margins and Volatile Price Swings Make It Tougher

“The likelihood that China will pass Japan may indicate the beginning of a phase in which China plays a more important role in the global flat panel display industry,” said Shawn Lee, senior analyst for DisplaySearch, in a press release.

In a report published on Monday, DisplaySearch said Chinese production of large-area, thin-film transistor LCD panels (liquid crystal display panels) will pass Japanese output in the current quarter. China's share of the global large-area LCD panel market is expected to reach 5.3 % in the second quarter, compared to Japan's 3.5%. In the most recent quarter, Japan's share was 5.8% versus China's 4.8%.

One reason leading to this result on LCD panel market, according to the current manufacturing conditions on this market is the profits on this part of electronic component market, which includes the below two factors, the razor-thin profit margins and volatile price swings.

Because of these two factors, so far with the notable exception of Sharp Corp. and Panasonic Corp., Japanese firms have largely given up manufacturing large-sized LCD panels.

DisplaySearch has identified the shift, this time in the production of large-sized liquid crystal display panels, the basic screen component for flat-screen televisions, computer monitors, laptops and tablet computers.

Although, currently Korea and Taiwan, the top two regions in the world, received little impacts by China and Japan in this market, sharing a combined 90% of LCD panel market, that situation may be changing with the increasing number of new LCD panel plants in China.

One phenomenon that we have to notice is that even Sharp, Japan's biggest maker of large LCD panels, is also moving some production to the Chinese market. By adding more supply and competitors to an already-cutthroat industry, the large-sized LCD panel market is expected to grow even tougher.

However, one thing Chinese must pay more concerns is that, China cannot always rely on the low price human resources, instead to foster and develop their own technologies and excellent talents are the core competitive forces in this market. As a result, it is a tougher time for Chinese manufactures to make more benefits from LCD panel market as well. China might have to put more efforts on technologies to be stronger in this fierce competition.

We Are Positive on 2011’s Electronics

According to the industry research, 2010 revenue growth of electronics industry is 38 percent  in china, and it forecasts that 2011’s growth rate will continue to be higher than 10 percent. The latest Electronic Components Distributor Survey shows that electronic components distributors who participated in this survey are optimistic about China’s electronics market, of which 87% of the respondents expected that they would achieve a more than 10 percent growth rate of annual sales by 2011. The Chinese electronics manufacturers also stand in the cheerful side on this market.

This survey tells us that the main force that drive China's electronic information industry to maintained rapid growth are the popularity of 3G services, the demands on smart phones, and tablet computers, replacement demand for flat-panel TVs and other transportation investment demands in high-speed rails and subways. China is now making large investment to improve the transportations across the country.

One analyst called Zhang told reporters that he current consumer demand for electronics industry is still mainly from smart phones, tablet PCs and other traditional consumer electronics, but the survey results indicate that the current LED lighting, medical electronics, solar power, wind power, electric vehicles , and other new emergent industry are beginning to become the new hot spots in China's electronics industry. Distributors in the industry are significantly paying increasing attentions to such industries. Among all these popular fields, the most outstanding one is the LED light which ranks first winning a 55% of the distributors’ attractiveness.

Moreover, this Analyst Zhang thought that as a as a green and environmental friendly industry LED lighting received a general industry's attention because of its great potential for development even it was still under government's strong supports and the civil lighting market has not grown up yet.

However, Jin Fan Yong, the vice president of Taiwanese LED manufacturers Epistar holds the idea that the most important factor is that the LED lighting market space is large enough to attract many companies concerns, which is 5-10 times larger than the LED TV market. Furthermore, the current incandescent, fluorescent and energy-saving lamps markets are yet to under control by the industry giants such as GE and Philips. Therefore, there is still more great development room for the new enterprises in the LED lighting market.

The LED lighting market will soon start up, and Fan Jin Yong is expected late this year or early next year, the first year of LED general lighting market will come.
